Kurinuki Workshop

Discover the traditional Japanese technique of Kurinuki, a mindful process of carving and hollowing blocks of clay to create your own handcrafted pottery. During this workshop you will make one chawan (traditional Japanese tea bowl) and two yunomi (Japanese tea cups), embracing spontaneity, texture, and the beauty of imperfection. This hand-building method celebrates the natural marks of the maker and the wabi-sabi aesthetic.

At the end of the session, you will choose from three carefully selected glaze finishes for your pieces. Your work will then be professionally glazed and fired, and will be ready to collect from the Japanese Gardens approximately 2–3 weeks after the workshop.

Please note: Due to the nature of ceramics, all pieces must be taken away after the workshop for drying, glazing and firing. If you would like to receive your finished pottery, please make sure you are able to collect your work from the Japanese Gardens once notified that it is ready.
